The American Express Red (AmexCo Red) credit card is one of a range of products to be released to benefit the Global Fund, which is the world's leading funder of programmes that fight Aids, malaria and tuberculosis.
"Red is a 21st century idea. I think doing the Red thing, doing good, will turn out to be good business for them," Bono said, according to the Financial Times.
The credit card will initially be targeted at what are called 'conscience consumers' – the 1.5 million Britons more likely to buy products associated with social benefits.
With the AmexCo Red credit card, one per cent of eligible spend goes directly into the Global Fund every quarter on the holder's behalf. This rises to 1.25 per cent if more than £5,000 is spent on the credit card in a year.
If the card is used in the first month, an extra £5 will be donated to the fund.
