Of vehicle owners in the UK, a huge 63 per cent say that they have experience damage or vandalism on the car at some point during their time on the road, according to new research.

In addition, the survey carried out by Direct Line found that one in seven motorists have suffered at the hands of vandals within the last year.

According to the insurance company, this is equal to five million cars being defaced very year, costing on average £267 each time.

When asked how concerned people in the UK felt about the risk of criminal damage to their vehicles, 93 per cent of respondents said that they were very concerned about it, and 79 per cent worried over where was safest to park their car.

Spokesperson for Direct Line, Emma Holyer, said: "It is a worry that motorists feel so concerned about vandalism that it is putting them off buying the car of their choice.

"The reality is that this is an opportunist crime and vandals can strike any car at any time and if motorists are worried the most important thing they can do is to protect themselves with comprehensive insurance cover with a company they can trust."
