Garages could mean big savings for motorists

A UK insurance company has said that British drivers could save a mountain of money if they parked their car in a garage.

Saga says that of the 56 per cent of motorists that have a garage, only 24 per cent actually use it, meaning the rest park their vehicles in a more dangerous and exposed position on a driveway or roadside.

The insurer estimates discounts totalling £100 million a year are being missed out on by motorists who leave their cars in what Saga calls "vulnerable" positions.

"People are leaving their cars out on the streets at the mercy of opportunist thieves, vandals and the British weather!" said Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga.

"By clearing out their garage to make room for their car they could make a significant saving on their motor insurance."

Two thirds of people questioned said their garage was not an option due to the sheer amount of household items and junk stored in there.

The British weather has very much been a factor recently, with inclement weather conditions and a predicted horrific winter yet to come.
