Insurance crucial to cover roadside danger

Friday, January 6, 2006

Britain is not a nation of good Samaritans when it comes to helping other drivers, new research has revealed, prompting the need for sufficient car insurance.

Tesco Car Breakdown Cover's research shows that 90 per cent of drivers would not help a fellow motorist if they saw them broken down on the side of the road.

However, it would seem that this is often for non-malicious reasons, with 40 per cent saying it is better for professionals to help and 15 per cent saying they would probably make the problem worse.

"Though it can seem uncaring to carry on driving when you see someone in trouble, it is for the best," said Allan Burns, head of insurance for Tesco Personal Finance.

"Motorists should always call their breakdown service provider rather than trying to flag down other drivers. Doing so could be hazardous to themselves and others."

Being stopped on the side of the road, especially the hard shoulder of a motorway, can be very dangerous, so adequate car insurance is vital to protect your vehicle from further damage if it breaks down.
